For the second time in as many weeks, the 2000 NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion, Jeff Green, will sub for recuperating driver Eric McClure, who sustained injuries in a late-race accident two weeks ago at Talladega Superspeedway, TriStar Motorsports PR reports.

Impact:
Green did a good job subbing for McClure last week at Darlington. He piloted the No. 14 Toyota to a 19th-place finish at the Track too Tough to Tame. He should be up for another Top 20 run again this weekend at Iowa Speedway. The small oval lends itself to Green's veteran NASCAR experience.

Richard Petty Motorsports continues to introduce new partners to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2012. The latest company to unite with the legendary organization is Transportation Impact who will make their NASCAR debut as the primary sponsor of the No. 43 team and driver Aric Almirola during the Pocono 400 at the Pocono Raceway on June 10, richardpettymotorsports.com reports.

Impact:
Transportation Impact will color the sides and top of the No. 43 Ford at Pocono in a few weeks. Almirola has been steadily improving this season and he generally cracks the Top 20 each weekend. The young RPM driver should carry the new sponsor to a potential Top 15 at Pocono Raceway.

David Ragan will pilot the No. 34 U.S. Shredder Ford in this Saturday's NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Front Row Motorsports' Facebook page reports.

Impact:
Because of his victory last summer at Daytona, Ragan is eligible for this year's All-Star Challenge field. He will be in the FRM No. 34 Ford this time around instead of the No. 6 Roush Ford that he won at Daytona with last year. Ragan will be somewhat out-equipped by the star-studded All-Star race field, so his prospects for a Top-10 finish are slim.

After serving as the primary sponsor of David Ragan's No. 34 Ford at Daytona and Texas, Al's Liner will now serve as the primary sponsor of Front Row Motorsports' No. 38 Ford driven by Dave Gilliland, in Saturday's Sprint All-Star Showdown, Front Row Motorsports PR reports.

Impact:
A special sponsor will come on board with Gilliland during his All-Star weekend this Saturday at Charlotte. The journeyman driver earned a respectable eighth-place finish in last season's Showdown, so expectations are high for the No. 38 team at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Tony Gibson, crew chief for the No. 39 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team, has been placed on NASCAR probation until June 27 for his actions during the May 12 race at Darlington Raceway, NASCAR PR reports.

Impact:
Newman scooted through unscathed on this incident, but his crew chief Gibson wasn't so lucky. He will be put on probation until June 27 as a result of the No. 39 team's confrontation of Kurt Busch's No. 51 team on pit road following last Saturday night's Bojangles' Southern 500. In addition, one of the No. 39 team crew members has been fined $5,000 and placed on probation until June 27 as well.

NASCAR has fined Kurt Busch, driver of the No. 51 car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, $50,000 and placed him on NASCAR probation until July 25 for his actions during the May 12 race at Darlington Raceway, NASCAR PR reports.

Impact:
Busch's reckless driving on pit road last weekend and altercation between the No. 51 and No. 39 teams that resulted from the incident are the reason that NASCAR has slapped the veteran driver with a $50,000 fine and probation. In addition, a crew member of Busch's team has been handed a $5,000 fine for interfering with a member of the broadcast media. No matter who Busch races for he just can't seem to outrun his bad temper and bad reputation.

When Earnhardt Jr. roars to a start at Michigan International Speedway on June 17, his No. 88 Diet Mountain Dew Chevy will feature one of four paint schemes inspired by the highly anticipated final film in Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy, Diet Mountain Dew' Facebook page reports.

Impact:
Fans will get to vote up until May 25 on one of four designs for the batman car that Earnhardt will race at Michigan in June. The winning design will be what the Hendrick Motorsports star races at MIS. The two-mile oval in Brooklyn, Michigan is the site of Earnhardt's last Sprint Cup victory, so that could be a good omen for this event.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returned to the historic Darlington Raceway over Mother's Day weekend for 368-laps under the lights. Juan Pablo Montoya's Target team qualified in the 27th position and battled with handling on the finicky racetrack throughout the evening to finish out the race in 24th, earnhardtganassi.com reports.

Impact:
The lean times at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing continue. Montoya and his teammate Jamie McMurray struggle to be competitive each week, and the Darlington race was no exception for the No. 42 team. The NASCAR All-Star Challenge is scheduled for this weekend, and should provide a good break and distraction for the struggling Montoya.

Bobby Labonte crossed Darlington Raceway's finish line in 29th-place during the 63rd Annual Bojangles' Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on Saturday night, bobbylabonte.com reports.

Impact:
A late-race crash foiled any chances Labonte had at cracking the Top 25 at Darlington. The No. 47 Toyota was an absolute bear to handle all night long at the South Carolina oval. The veteran driver fought it all the way up until the lap 279 encounter with the outside wall. Labonte's team made repairs and he limped home to the sub-par 29th-place finish. The All-Star break is coming at a good time for the JTG Daugherty race team.

Landon Cassill fought the handling and catching the breaks to finish 26th in Saturday night's Bojangles' Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, BK Racing PR reports.

Impact:
"Sometimes the breaks just don't fall your way," Cassill said. "We had a strong Burger King/Dr Pepper Toyota tonight. It was handling well for most of the race. We made a few adjustments, but it didn't need too much. The cautions just didn't cooperate." The No. 83 team has been gathering some momentum under Cassill's racing. The Top-25 finish at Darlington didn't materialize, but the future is very bright for this young driver and new race team.

Despite sponsorship issues, Matt Kenseth's future is secure at Roush Fenway Racing. Team owner Jack Roush said Monday that the 2003 Sprint Cup champion, in the final year of his current contract, will have a ride with RFR as long as he wants one, ESPN.com reports.

Impact:
"Matt Kenseth is a cornerstone of Roush Fenway and he'll be part of it as long as I am, as long as he wants to be," Roush said. "He certainly has a place here as long as I'm able to stay at the head of it." The No. 17 team still lacks sponsorship, but the Roush stance behind Kenseth is very firm. The organization has made it clear they want to have the veteran driver in the fold for the foreseeable future.

All three Joe Gibbs Racing teams raced inside the Top 10 all night at Darlington Raceway and when the Bojangles Southern 500 had concluded all three of their teams earned finishes in the Top 10, with Joey Logano finishing 10th, joegibbsracing.com reports.

Impact:
The effort capped a great weekend for Logano at Darlington Raceway. After winning Friday night's Nationwide Series race at the Lady in Black, the young driver rallied to finish in the Top 10 in the Cup event on Saturday night. The finish snapped an eight-race Top 10 drought for the No. 20 Toyota team, and marked Logano's third Top-10 finish of the season. He now sits 15th in the overall driver standings after the Bojangles' Southern 500.

Marcos Ambrose overcame the infamous Darlington Stripe to finish ninth in Saturday night's Bojangles' Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, richardpettymotorsports.com reports.

Impact:
After more than one encounter with the outside wall at Darlington, it was shaping up to be a tough night at the South Carolina oval for Ambrose. However, he rallied late in the race to push into the Top 10 for the first time this season. Ambrose came from as far as two laps down to crack the Top 10 at Darlington, so it was quite an impressive feat. It was just the performance that the struggling No. 9 RPM team needed heading into All-Star week.

While Hendrick Motorsports collected its 200th win in Saturday's NASCAR Sprint Cup event at Darlington Raceway, Kasey Kahne was notching a milestone of his own. The driver of the No. 5 Rockwell Tools Chevrolet captured an eighth-place finish to record his fifth straight Top-10 finish-the longest such streak of his Cup career, kaseykahne.com reports.

Impact:
From the look of it, you wouldn't know that this team was struggling just a few short weeks ago. Kahne led 33 laps and was a presence at the front of the pack for the entire 500-miles of racing at the Track too Tough to Tame. With the finish, the veteran driver sets a career-best mark with five consecutive Top-10 finishes. Kahne now resides 16th overall in the driver standings heading to this week's All-Star break at Charlotte.

Roush Fenway Racing's Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards finished sixth and seventh to lead RFR's effort in Saturday night's Southern 500 Sprint Cup race at Darlington Raceway, roushfenway.com reports.

Impact:
It was a very workmanlike effort for the No. 99 Ford team and Edwards. The Roush Fenway Racing star kept within the Top 10 most of the night at the Darlington oval, but he never could make the headway needed to push up to challenge with the leaders. After 500 miles of racing at the Lady in Black, Edwards soldiered home to a nice seventh-place finish. It was his seventh Top 10 of the season, and it moves Edwards into 10th-place in the championship standings at 74 points behind the leader Greg Biffle.

Impact:
It was one of Kenseth's better Darlington outings in some time. He didn't lead any laps, but he maintained a presence in the Top 15 the entire night at the South Carolina oval. Kenseth used a late push to collect his seventh Top-10 finish of the season. The veteran driver heads into the All-Star break second in the overall driver standings at 2 points behind teammate Greg Biffle.

NASCAR is reviewing the fracas between Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman after the Darlington race to see if penalties are warranted, the Associated Press reports.

Impact:
Busch did a burnout in a fit of rage late in the Bojangles' Southern 500 on Saturday night. While leaving his pit stall the burnout carried him dangerously through Newman's pit stall. After the race concluded both team's pit crews had to be separated, and Busch had to be isolated. The dust up was pretty contentious and saw a NASCAR official pushed over the hood of Busch's No. 51 Chevrolet. NASCAR is going to investigate the incident to see if any penalties are warranted. Newman should be in the clear on this one, but we're not so sure about the hot-tempered Busch.

05.13.12

Michael Schumacher will be assessed a five-place grid penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Impact:
Stewards decided that race contact between Bruno Senna and Schumacher was the German's fault, and levied the penalty. From replays it appeared as though Schumacher's rate of closure was too fast, and he rear-ended the Brazilian.

05.13.12

Kimi Raikkonen finished third in the Spanish Grand Prix, just running short of overtaking Fernando Alonso on the final lap.

Impact:
The race was a solid one for Lotus Renault. Raikkonen was one of the fastest cars on track in the closing laps, but ran out of distance and was unable to pass Alonso despite closing to within a second.

05.13.12

Fernando Alonso finished second in the Spanish Grand Prix, his home race.

Impact:
Alonso was unable to keep Maldonado behind him through strategy. Worn tires ended his late charge to overtake Pastor Maldonado, and was forced to settle for second position.
