Kris Letang has been bothered by a hip injury that could eventually require surgery, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact:
Letang has been advised to simply rest his hip. The Penguins defenseman, who scored 10 goals and 42 points in 51 games, has not disclosed any of the particulars of his ailment.
Zbynek Michalek underwent successful hip surgery Wednesday, the Penguins' official site reports.
Impact:
Michalek is expected to be ready for the start of training camp next season, though after a campaign that saw him record just 13 points in 62 games, his status is of more import to the Pens' blue line depth than it is to fantasy owners.
Evgeni Malkin is one of three nominees for the Hart trophy, given annually to the NHL's most valuable player.
Impact:
He's competing against Henrik Lundqvist of the Rangers and Steven Stamkos of the Lightning. He's never won the award despite being nominated twice before, but this year led the league in scoring with 109 points. The award will be handed out on June 20 in Las Vegas.
GM Ray Shero revealed Tuesday that Paul Martin has been dealing with concussion symptoms, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact:
Assuming that his symptoms are not severe, Martin now has plenty of time to recover this offseason, with the Penguins having been eliminated from the playoffs.
Eric Tangradi has been sent down to AHL affiliates Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Penguins Official Website reports.
Impact:
Following the Penguins' first-round playoff exit against the Flyers, Tangradi has been sent down to play in the remainder of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton playoff series against the Hershey Bears. Tangradi recorded two points in 24 games for the Penguins this past season.
Paul Martin (undisclosed) will miss his third straight game Sunday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact:
The Penguins have been mum on the nature of his injury. There's a chance that the team is scratching Martin simply because of ineffective play, but the Pens haven't said anything about the defenseman.
With two straight wins, Marc-Andre Fleury is peaking at the right time after starting out poorly against the Flyers.
Impact:
He was Pittsburgh's best penalty killer Friday night. Fleury played particularly well in the third period, when Philadelphia outshot Pittsburgh, 14-8, and the Pens were clinging to a one-goal lead. The Penguins goalie has allowed only two goals in the last 104-plus minutes of action. He'll need to stay on his game for Pittsburgh to have a chance at moving on to Round 2.
Jordan Staal leads the NHL in playoff scoring with six goals after collecting a goal Friday night in Game 5.
Impact:
Staal's more than just a Selke-caliber defenseman -- not that there's anything wrong with that -- and he's proving it in the playoffs. He's a big reason why the Penguins aren't already teeing them up.
Tyler Kennedy scored what turned out to be the game-winner midway through the second period on Friday night as Pittsburgh held on to defeat Philadelphia, 3-2.
Impact:
He also added an assist on Pittsburgh's second goal. Kennedy is having a solid series with three goals and three assists through five games. Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series goes Sunday afternoon.
Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 of 26 shots Friday night to help the Penguins to a 3-2 win over the Flyers. Philadelphia now leads the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series three games to two with Game 6 set for Sunday afternoon.
Impact:
After three terrible games to start the series, Fleury has started to settle down and play some solid hockey the last two games resulting in two Pittsburgh wins.
Simon Despres is expected to take Paul Martin's spot in the lineup Friday night, the Penguins' Web site reports.
Impact:
Despres is expected to see time on the point with the team's no. 2 power-play unit. For that reason, he's worth a flyer (pun intended) in deep leagues.
Paul Martin (undisclosed) will not play in Friday's Game 5 against the Flyers, Sam Kasan of the Penguins' official site reports.
Impact:
Martin was again unable to skate Friday morning, and Penguins coach Dan Bylsma later confirmed that Martin will be unavailable for the game. It's not clear what is troubling Martin, but his play has borderlined on inept at times. Simon Despres is expected to once again take Martin's spot in the lineup.
Evgeni Malkin scored his first two goals of the NHL playoffs Wednesday night as the Penguins staved off elimination with a 10-3 pasting of Philadelphia in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.
Impact:
He also added an assist, was a plus-4, and was named the game's second star. Even though he hadn't scored through the first three games of the series, he did have four assists entering Game 4.
Jordan Staal picked up a hat trick Wednesday night as Pittsburgh downed Philadelphia 10-3. The Flyers lead the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series three games to one.
Impact:
He's had a solid series so far with five goals and two assists and a plus-2 rating through four games. All five of Staal's goals have come in the last two games.
With James Neal out on suspension, Tyler Kennedy is expected to skate on the top line Wednesday alongside Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz, according to TSN.ca.
Impact:
While that may not boost his power-play time, any time a guy is seeing regular minutes with Malkin he's worth a look in daily lineup leagues. Kennedy has never been a huge scorer, but he does have two points in what's been an offensive (perhaps in more ways than one) series to date, and his ice time should see an uptick Wednesday with other regulars out of the lineup.
Paul Martin is out for Wednesday's Game 4 against the Flyers with an undisclosed injury, the Penguins' Twitter Feed reports.
Impact:
With Martin out, Simon Despres was called up by the Penguins to bolster their blue line as they try to fend off playoff elimination Wednesday.
The Penguins have recalled Simon Despres from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Penguins' Twitter Feed reports.
Impact:
Despres will give the Penguins some added blue-line depth, with Paul Martin unavailable for Wednesday's Game 4 against the Flyers.
The NHL has suspended Arron Asham four games for attempting to injure Philadelphia forward Brayden Schenn with a cross-check in the first period of Sunday's loss, the Associated Press reports.
Impact:
Asham is more of a role player for the Pens, but when you add in the fact the team will also be without suspended teammates James Neal and Craig Adams, and is down 3-0 in the series ... well, the Pens find themselves in quite the dilly of a pickle.
The NHL has suspended James Neal one game for charging Flyers forward Claude Giroux in the third period of Sunday's loss, the Associated Press reports.
Impact:
Well, the Penguins certainly have quite the hole to dig themselves out of, as they're down 3-0 in the series and will be missing three players due to suspension when the series resumes Wednesday, including their second-leading scorer in Neal.
Paul Martin did not practice Tuesday, Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site reports.
Impact:
Martin was the only Penguins player not to practice, but the 31-year-old is not believed to be injured. He's likely just resting up before Wednesday's crucial Game 4.
