Danny O'Brien (non-throwing arm) will be limited in spring practices, The Washington Post reports.

Impact:
O'Brien will compete for the starting 2012 role, but after his disastrous 2011 season he'll have a hard time catching C.J. Brown.

02.06.12

Jamal Woodyard will likely miss the 2012 season due to a knee injury he suffered in Southern Miss' bowl game against Nevada, the Hattiesburg American reports.

Impact:
Bad as the news is for Woodyard, Southern Miss will be fine without him. The team has three other BCS-level talents at running back in Kendrick Hardy, Tracy Lampley and Desmond Johnson.

02.04.12

Brett Smith underwent what appears to be a hand surgery Thursday, KOWB 1290-AM reports.

Impact:
Smith evidently played through a hand issue that caused a considerable amount of pain last year, which makes his impressive freshman season even more encouraging. Smith threw 20 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions despite his injury.

02.03.12

Garrett Gilbert (shoulder) could be eligible to play in 2012, Fox Sports Southwest reports.

Impact:
Gilbert could be eligible to play in 2012 if he graduates from Texas before enrolling at SMU. We'll provide updates on his process as more is known.

02.03.12

Dominique Whaley (ankle) will miss spring practices, The Oklahoman reports.

Impact:
Whaley has a chance to be ready for fall practices, but he'll need the spring off to recover.

02.03.12

Tyrone Duplessis died Thursday morning due to an unknown cause, the Associated Press reports.

Impact:
There aren't many answers as to what caused the sad event, but Duplessis reportedly broke from his sleep due to chest pains shortly before his death.

02.02.12

Marcus Coker will transfer to Stony Brook, CBS Sports reports.

Impact:
Coker is a major talent and a huge get for the FCS program. Although he'll tear it up at Stony Brook, Coker will not make a return to the FBS and is therefore permanently off the fantasy radar.

02.02.12

Andy Summerlin is leaving Memphis to transfer to Samford, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.

Impact:
Summerlin's days as an FBS player are almost certainly over. Taylor Reed and Jacob Karam will compete for the quarterback spot in Memphis.

02.02.12

D.J. Harper has been granted a sixth year of eligibility, the Idaho Statesman reports.

Impact:
Harper is a big injury worry after tearing the same ACL twice, but he has significant fantasy upside with the great Doug Martin out of the way. He'll find much less room to run now that Kellen Moore is gone, but Harper ran for nine touchdowns on just 115 carries last year and should be a fantasy starter in most formats if he stays on the field.

02.02.12

Scotty Young is leaving the Texas Tech program, CBS Sports reports.

Impact:
Young was a high-ranking recruit for Tech in 2010, so this hurts the team's depth behind Seth Doege. It's not clear where Young is headed, but he should be able to land in the FBS.

02.02.12

Jacob Karam transferred to Memphis, the Associated Press reports.

Impact:
A Texas Tech transfer, Karam is a huge recruit by Memphis standards. Despite the promising showing by Taylor Reed last year (10 touchdowns, four interceptions), Karam is a threat to win the starting spot for Memphis. Marcus Rucker, Billy Foster and Kevin Wright make up a surprisingly decent group of pass catchers for the Tigers, so keep an eye on Karam.

02.02.12

Joe Craig has been kicked off the Clemson football team, ESPN reports.

Impact:
Craig could have provided Clemson with some big-play ability with his speed, but he evidently had trouble keeping his behavior in line.

02.02.12

Duran Hollis has been kicked off the Iowa State team, the Des Moines Register reports.

Impact:
Although Hollis wasn't a big name for Iowa State, he displayed a lot of potential in his brief time with the team, so this loss could sting a bit. Hollis averaged 6.9 yards per carry as he ran for 213 yards last year, including a two-game road span in which he ran for 102 yards on 12 carries against Oklahoma and Kansas State. It appears he was a habitual breaker of team rules, however.

02.02.12

Kevin Newsome has transferred to Temple, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.

Impact:
This would have been a great fit back in October, but the quarterback spot for Temple is currently filled by Chris Coyer, who was rather brilliant in the last month or so of last year. Coyer went 30-of-50 for 463 yards (9.3 YPA) and six touchdowns with no interceptions while running for an exceptional total of 562 yards on 69 carries (8.1 YPC) and three touchdowns. Newsome is a former four-star recruit and is a strong runner, but it's hard to see Temple messing with the Coyer formula after it worked nearly flawlessly last year.

01.30.12

After attempting to transfer back to Rutgers after transferring from Rutgers to Arizona, the NCAA denied Tom Savage clearance to play in the 2012 season, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Impact:
It's not clear what Savage will do in light of this. He would have been the favorite to win the starting spot if he had been granted the waiver.

01.28.12

Kyle Prater will transfer to Northwestern, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Impact:
There's no way to know what the offense around him will be like in 2013, but Prater was a huge recruit coming out of high school and could be an impact player in a Northwestern system that is typically productive in the passing game.

01.26.12

Pete Thomas will transfer to North Carolina State, the Coloradoan reports.

Impact:
Despite his struggles at Colorado State, North Carolina State decided to extend Thomas an invitation. He might start for the team in 2013.

01.26.12

Robert Woods (ankle) is expected to be ready for spring practices, the Orange County Register reports.

Impact:
Even if he misses some of the spring, Woods will be a candidate to be the first receiver off the board in fantasy drafts. His top competition should be, in no particular order, Nick Harwell, Sammy Watkins and Marquess Wilson.

01.20.12

Josh Doctson transferred from Wyoming to TCU, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Impact:
There isn't any evidence that Doctson was recruited by TCU, so it appears as if he earned himself a promotion by catching 35 passes for 393 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman last year.

01.20.12

Kenny Turner has declared for the 2012 NFL Draft, the Las Cruces Sun-News reports.

Impact:
Turner might be the most intriguing prospect in the entire draft. A high school teammate of Chris Johnson (TEN) and Mike Sims-Walker in Florida, Turner might have been a high-ranking recruit if it weren't for his criminal history. According to Sims-Walker and the high school coach of the trio, Turner was the best player of the three. But Turner heads into the draft as a felon -- one with two knee ligament tears (including one ACL). Based on reports of Turner's arrest, he's around 26 years old, too. He spent five years in prison, starting at age 16, after shooting two individuals in a non-fatal fashion. Sims-Walker was actually with him at the time -- Turner was in a car with MSW when a nearby individual fired gunshots into the air. Turner claims to have mistakenly believed the fire was headed in his direction, and he shot back. There are at least two well done stories on Turner, including by the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Orlando Sentinel. In any case, Turner was impressive in the 2011 college football season, showing potential as both a running back and receiver. He ran for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns (4.9 YPC) and caught 46 passes for 514 yards and three touchdowns. Those numbers include a spectacular showing on the road against Georgia's SEC defense, a game in which he ran for 94 yards and a touchdown and caught eight passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. If he tests well in workouts and convinces teams he's not a character liability for something he did 10 years ago, Turner could turn some heads.
